Sharing my completed art journal page for this week.

Last week was coloured pencils (right up my alley) in the “Supplies Me” workshop I am doing with Jane Davenport.

This whole thing is about letting go being free and experimenting with different materials and learning new skills and hence the “Be Free” in the drawing. We learned about drawing faces and backs and bottoms and all about pencils. It’s so fun just enjoying the creativity these aren’t supposed to be works of art just a bit of fun.

I love this girl though I think she will be popping up in a few of my future works.

I mainly used coloured pencils on my page which was primed with medium.
It doesn’t allow me to get on as many layers as i am used to with the coloured pencil but does allow me to use other materials like the inktense pencil and a bit of watercolour in the backround. I used Zest-it to blend some of the pencil which was interesting normally the Zest-it blends all of the layers and kinda soaks right into the layers of the paper. As I had the medium on it really just kinda stayed on the top of the paper and didnt blend in as much went to more like paint. The love heart under the works you can see went quite vibrant. I also noticed a difference on the pages on the left where i had Gesso on the previous page to on the right where i didnt, you can see the difference in the way it blends and how many layers i could get on.

Heaps o fun, this week is watercolour week and I already have found a new way of working that I have been searching for, that is quick and easy and vibrant and absolutely loving!!!

Did you know that apparently Michelangelo could walk up to a wall and draw an absolutely perfect 6foot circle?

Ofcourse this isn’t really necessary these days but it’s hard to draw a good circle and its something that takes practice, often students want to skip to the harder stuff without mastering the fundatmentals and even when you have been drawing a while sometimes its good to just go aback and practice the basics to provide some renewed inspirtion and refine your techniques. So, today and everyday this week I will be practicing circles, lines, ovals, spirals etc

Seeing Sketch

The new year deserves an ear and a sketch, this is this morning’s effort that happened over coffee.

I have said every year for the past 3 that I am going to sketch more (like everyday) but life has often gotten in the way and it just hasn’t happened.

This year I am seeing myself and my art in a different light, and at the moment I could say yes I am going to do it BUT I am not confident that I will definately be able to commit.

So I am mulling over things at the moment taking my time with   my plan for 2010 and enjoying the moment.

Today was my weekly sketch group, i didn’t attend last week so i made sure i got back on track to attend this week again.

Today i just felt like drawing faces, i really enjoy the standing poses at the beginning which are only 2-5 mins. In the longer sitting poses, i tend not to like drawing the full figure and focus on details and getting the lines and curves right. Overall, I still am struggling with proportions but its less and less obvious now. Its becoming easier each time i go, its a great group we have a good laugh Driving back home its the most relaxed i have been all week.

The good thing about sharing parenting responsibilities is that you tend to get a weekend “off” every now and then, (its about one of the only good things about it) –   i am taking all the positives i can get at the moment, so this weekend i am looking forward to spending the weekend on some much needed art / studio time and cleaning the house top to bottom uninterrupted. Bliss!
